Big Turnout for Spring League Mile
Last Thursday saw the running of the 1st leg of the Spring League. It consisted of 1 mile on the track on a lovely evening for running. Even though the mile is no longer run any more in championships, having given way to the 1500 metres, it still retains the affection of so many runners. A huge crowd of sixty three runners turned up at the start which necessitated the running of two separate races.
The first mile race consisted of runners who were in the main, capable of running six minutes or over. Fra Mollen led out the race in the early stages but was the passed by the experienced duo of Johnny Feery and John O’Connell who are both on the way back after injury. Feery looked to have the race sewn up but was overtaken in the last few strides by the fast finishing John O’Connell who won in a time of 5.36.4. Fra Mollen ran on strong to take third place in 5.46.7 while Michelle Mullaney showed impressive form in her first mile race by comfortably getting inside six minutes with a 5.53.9 clocking in placing fourth. Fifth place went to Ger Keyes in a time of 6.04.2.
So then it was onto the faster mile and here, Catch Grennan lived up to his pre race favoritism by comfortably winning in a time of 4.46.9 from Mark Serviss who showed impressive speed in clocking 4.51.1. Richie Galvin came home in third place in 4.53.8 ahead of Mick Murphy who also broke five minutes with a 4.59.2 clocking. In fifth place came sixteen year old Harry Flynn who must be pleased with both his time of 5.02.8 and finishing ahead of so many senior runners. Liz Cuskelly was the fastest woman on the night when finishing in 21st place overall in a time of 5.31.6.
