European Masters
Ger Hensey competed in the European masters track and field championships in Hungary last week. Ger has been troubled by injury recently and was apprehensive as he lined up for the 100 metre heats. Ger finished in third place in his heat in 11.82 to qualify for the semi finals. In the semis Ger finished in fourth place in 11.79 and just missed out on a place in the final by 0.05 of a second.
On Wedensday Ger finished in third place in his heat of the 200 metres in a time of 24.47. In the semi finals Ger was placed eight in 24.49 but failed to make it through to the final.
Catch Grennan was due to run in the heats of the 800 metres but these were cancelled and so he lined up on Thursday last for the final. After a slow first lap of 63 seconds the pace exploded and Catch ran well to finish in a great sixth place in a time of 2.01.7, just two seconds off the bronze medal.
International Snowdon Mountain race.
John Harkin travelled to Wales to take part in the 35th Snowdon Mountain race. This famous race attracted a field of six hundred athletes of various nationalities and took them to a height of over 3500 feet. The athletes were greeted with mist and light rain as they took to the start line at 2pm, however these conditions were nothing compared to what awaited them on the upper slopes of Snowdon, with strong winds and driving rain awaiting them at the summit, some 5 miles away and at an elevation of over 3500 feet. John ran a very strong race to finish in 27th place and was the second Irishman home in a time of 1.19.26.
