20th July 2008 - Results and Fixtures
CURLEY SELECTED FOR BEIJING AND NATIONAL TITLE FOR KENNEDY
Sunday 20th July was an historic day for Tullamore Harriers with Pauline Curley selected for the Marathon at the Beijing Olympics and Gordon Kennedy winning the clubs first men’s national track title. In April Pauline had run 2.39.01 at the Rotterdam Marathon, which was inside the B qualifying Olympic standard but her participation was only confirmed following Sunday’s National Track & Field Championships. Naturally Pauline was very excited and a little shocked on hearing the news but is looking forward to the Olympic challenge.
Gordon Kennedy came into the National Track & Field Championships in Santry having run a season best 400 metres the previous Sunday at the Flanders Cup in Ghent Belgium. Gordon ran 46.76 to take second place behind Mitch Potter USA in 46.66 just edging out Jamaican Barret De Waybe in third place. Having won his heat on Saturday in 48.62 Gordon was in lane 3 for Sunday’s final. With the favourable lane position Gordon was fast out of the blocks setting the pace and leading coming into the home straight ran strong to cross the line in 46.91 to take the title, with Brian Boyle Finn Valley AC second in 47.17 and Brian Gregan Tallaght AC third in 47.43.
Richie Faulkner ran 4.52.62 in the heats of the 1,500 and Joe Mulligan was 4th in the Junior 35lb for Height.
Galway man Paul Hession of Athenry AC ran a brilliant 10.25 to retain his 100 metres title and the Paddy Larkin Trophy as National 100 metre champion.
