18th May 2008 - Results and Fixtures

GOOD START TO NATIONAL TRACK AND FIELD LEAGUE
The first round of the National Track & Field League took place last Sunday in Tullamore and Antrim. Both the Ladies and Men’s teams were competing on home ground with the Ladies in Division 1 drawn against St Abbans, West Waterford, Crusaders, Meath, Galway and Kildare. While the Men in the Premier Division were drawn against Crusaders, Leevale, Menapians, West Waterford, Dundrum South Dublin, and Meath. The ladies put in a very impressive performance with Ann Marie McGlynn winning the 400 and 800, Pauline Curley winning the 3000, Pauline Lambe winning the 1500 and Georgina Tuohy winning the walk. A number of second and third places from Aine Brennan, Niamh Mullen, Lisa Dolan, Lorna Mangan and Claire Collins contributed to a fine score of 107 points on the day and puts them in a strong position for the second round. The men faced tough competition in the Premier Division but battled for points in every event. Our only event winner was Gordon Kennedy in the 400, while the highlight of the day was Darragh Hanlon taking second place in the Pole Vault. The Pole Vault was an event we have been unable to fill in this competition for many years so it was great to score points this year. Catch Grennan ran an impressive 2.04 in the 800 while Tom Raftery was third in both Discus and Javelin. Well done to all the lads and hopefully we can make up the points in the next round to qualify for the final.

The overall point’s position after round 1 has the Tullamore Ladies in third place on 107 points behind joint leaders North Down and Meath on 109 points. While the men are in tenth place on 83.5 points with North Down leading on 117 points from Clonliffe Harriers on 114 points and Leevale on 112 points. With the top eight teams to qualify for the final the men have ten point gap to make up in round 2 to overtake West Waterford on 93.5 points. The next round of the league is on the 15th June in either Santry or Cork.
