Walsh’s Treble the Highlight in National Masters.
The Masters Track and field Championships were held in the Tullamore Harriers stadium last Sunday. Mary Walsh completed a treble in the V6 category where she won the 200 metres in 36.34, 400metres 86.48 and the 800metres which she won in a time of 3.20.3. Liz Cuskelly had the misfortune to miss the start of the 3000 metres but she put that behind her and went on to run away from the field in the 1500 metres to claim gold in a time of 4.51.
Tom Rafferty finished third in both the V2 discus with 32.06 and the javelin where he threw 47.97. This wrapped up a great year for Tom in the throwing events. It was great to see former Tullamore Harriers member David Courtney who was competing for Ennis AC. winning the V3 javelin with a throw of 38.55. David is the Harriers club record holder in the javelin with 65.00 metres dating back to 1982.
Jim Langan won two bronze medals in the V7 800 metres (2.57.07) and the 1500 metres in 6.04.93. Noel Kelly finished second in the V1 5000 metres in a good time of 15.33. Also in the 5000 metres V4 Johnny Feery was placed third with 17.29. John Donegan clocked 17.05 in the V3 5000 metres.
Catch Grennan finished strongly in the V1 1500 metres to get third place in 4.26. Larry Rigney also got third in the 5000 metre walk. Tom Feighery clocked 14.90 in the V5 100 metres to claim a bronze medal.
Castlepollard 5k Road Race
The annual Castlepollard 5k road race took place in the north Westmeath town last Wedensday. On a dry warm evening a big field of 260 runners lined up at the start. Best placed Tullamore Harriers athlete was Jody O’Reilly who finished in 14th position in a time of 16.50. Johnny Feery was 21st and 3rd over 50 in a time of 17.21 while Liz Cuskelly was first lady over 35 when finishing 31st overall in 17.56.
Caroline Kearney Memorial Triathlon
The Caroline Kearney Memorial Triathlon took place in Lilliput, Westmeath last Saturday and consisted of a 1500 metre swim, 40k cycle and finished with a 10k run. Ray Cambell completed the course in 2.29 with splits of Swim 27.06, Cycle 1.14.41 and Run 45.10. Mary Daly finished in 2.30 – S- 33.51, C- 1.12.14, R- 41.51. This gave Mary sixth place woman and victory in her age category. Maire Triona Keane had splits of S- 31.57, C- 1.28.38. R- 42.57 for a overall time of 2.46.
Training: Tuesday and Thursday at 6.30pm, Sunday morning at 8.30am Except on a race day.
