The second round of the National Track & Field League was held in Santry last Sunday with both the women and men’s teams securing a place in the final to be held in Tullamore on Sunday 27th July. Together with valuable hard won points in the other events scored 92 points for a total over the two rounds of 199 points to qualify in fourth place behind North Down (216 points) Meath (214 points) and Ballymena & Antrim (200 points).
The men were lying in tenth place going into the second round but put in a massive performance to make the top eight for the final. With Gordon Kennedy, Eoin Hannon, Paul Buckley, Babu Mathew winning six events between them and a number of other high scoring places to give a total of 115 points for second place behind winners Clonliffe Harriers (127 points). A combined total of 198.5 points lifted the team to fifth place behind Clonliffe Harriers 241 points, North Down 227 points, Leevale 215 points, and Shercock 205 points. IMPRESSIVE RUN BY KENNEDY IN RELAY BID
It’s still all to play for the Irish 4x400 relay team after a third place finish in Namur Belgium on Saturday night. Running the second leg Gordon ran 45.9 as the Irish team with Paul McKee, Brian Doyle and David Gillick recorded a time of 3.04.71 behind Belgium 3.02.16 and South Africia 3.04.66. A time of 3.04.30 in next weeks European Cup in Tallin Estonia would see them just make the current top 16 list for Beijing.
