Liam Burns it up in MacNamara 5 Mile

The annual MacNamara 5 mile road race was run off on Sunday on a lovely day for running. All the athletes are let off together and their finishing time is adjusted at the finish according to the handicap each athlete gets. The race started with two laps of the tarmac and after the first lap Catch Grennan had already established a lead over Declan Fahey with John Harkin next. By the time the race turned at Mucklagh Bridge Grennan had extended his lead and he maintained his form to the finish to win by over one hundred metres from Fahey with Harkin third and Johnny Feery having a great run to finish fourth. Liam Byrne had probably his best run to date, setting a new personal best of 31.51 in the process and when the handicaps were adjusted he was declared the winner of the MacNamara trophy. Indeed he needed to run well as he only had a margin of one second to spare over Johnny Feery with John Harkin taking third just ahead of Martin Carroll in fourth. Liz Cuskelly was the fastest woman on the day in a time of 30.06.
