Croghan 10K Win for Classy Minnock
Last Saturday saw the return of road racing to Croghan after a long absence with the running of a 10k road race on a scenic but tough hilly course. It was a beautiful day for running and a big crowd of 145 runners and walkers lined up at the start. The steep climbs that the runners had to negotiate were no problem to hill running specialist, Tullamore man Barry Minnock who raced to an impressive victory in a time of 33.32. He was followed home in second place by Canadian visitor Colin Dignum. Declan Fahey was the best of the Tullamore Harriers athletes when finishing a good third in a time of 35.28.
Pauline Curley finished in seventh place and was the first Lady home. Pauline recorded a time of 37.47.

Leinster Masters Road Championships
The leinster Novice and Masters Road Championships were held in Gowran, Kilkenny on Bank Holiday Monday with a good number of our athletes taking part despite been on the day after the Dochas run.
First into action were the Master Ladies who had to run a distance of 3000 metres. Tullamore’s Liz Cuskelly who was the defending champion was always to the fore in the race but in the end had to settle for second place behind her old rival Mullingar’s Mary Scully. Liz’s time was 10.45 which was actually quicker than her winning time twelve months ago.
Mary Daly claimed a bronze medal in the W3 category in a time of 12.01 while Martina Conlon placed sixth in the same category and clocked 12.46.
Una Mullen finished in fourth place in W2 in a time of 13.34.
In the Mens Masters race over 6000 metres Catch Grennan was our best placed finisher in third place in a fast time of 19.48. Declan Madden got third over 40 in 20.46 while Ciaran McGovern and Jim Langan won silver medals in their respective O 60 and O 65 categories with Ciaran clocking 25.27 and Jim 27.52. Tony McCormack placed seventh and Pat Conlon tenth in the over 50 category with times of 22.02 and 22.21 respectively. The Tullamore team finished in second place in the M3 category with Offaly claiming third place in the same event.
Our only representative in the Novice race over 6000 metres was Eddie Garry who had a fine run to finish 13th in a good time of 20.40.
Mullingar Road League
The first leg of the annual Mullingar Road League took place last Wednesday in the lovely grounds of Belvedere House. On a dry and sunny evening a record number of 422 runners took part in the race over a distance of three miles. The Harriers were well represented, not least by Declan Fahey who led out the race in the early stages. Declan still led the chasing group at the halfway mark but was overtaken in the closing stages by the winner Ger Heery from St Brigids and Na Fianna’s Peter Mooney.

Kildare Half Marathon :
The first running of the Kildare Half Marathon was staged through the flat countryside of the Curragh and its surrounds last Sunday and drew an incredible crowd of over 1,300 runners. Harriers athlete Noel Kelly ran a superb race to come home in second place just 10 seconds behind the winner, Lorcan Cronin from Cloniffe AC. Noel recorded a fast 1.10.33 for the 13.1 mile distance. Declan Madden also ran a fine race to come home in seventh place in a time of 1.18.39. Eddie Garry continued his good form to finish tenth in 1.21.14.
Other Tullamore results were 18th Tony McCormack 1.23.34 ; 656 Emer Kinnarney 2.01.18 ; 657 Tracey Mills 2.01.19.
News Roundup :
Three of our members competed in the Dublin Graded track and field meetings recently. Richie Faulkner had a great run in the 3000 metres where he finished in sixth place in a new personal best time of 10.19.Eoin Hannon was second in his 100 metre heat in 11.25 while Paul Kilmartin placed sixth in his 100 metre heat in 12.66. Paul also competed in the St Abbans Open Sports on Monday last where he won the 400 metres in a time of 51.69 (h).
The results of the team competitions from the National 10K run recently were announced and it was learned that the Tullamore were the winners of the Masters Womens team competition ahead of Mayo AC. in second with Tallaght AC third. The mens over 35 team were originally informed that they had narrowly missed out on national medals when finishing in fourth place but this was later rightly corrected to elevate Tullamore to third spot and so claim National bronze medals. The mens over 50 team took the silver medals, just fourteen seconds behind the winners Rathfarnham AC. Also in the same race Jim Langan won a bronze medal in the over 65 category in a time of 61.00.
Wednesday Night Training :
Training for beginners continues this Wednesday evening at 7 pm. It’s a fun way of getting some exercise and meeting people and everybody is welcome.
Colin Dunne Offaly Primary Schools Track and Field.
The Colin Dunne Offaly Primary Schools Track and Field Championships will take place this coming Saturday May 15th at 2.00pm in the Tullamore Harriers athletic stadium. This is always a great event with hundreds of young people competing and representing their schools in a fun environment. Teachers all over the county are preparing their teams for this event and there is sure to be a big crowd on the day so come on out and support this great event.
