National League Qualification for Men.

The second round of the National Track and field was held in Athlone last Sunday with both the women and men’s teams bidding to qualify for the finals to be held in Tullamore next month. The men’s team were in a good position from the previous round and built on that with an impressive all round team performance. This secured them sixth place overall and more importantly a place in the final.

On a day of many highlights it may be unfair to single out one but the performance of the 4 x 100m deserves particular mention. The quartet of Ger Hensey, Merve Solako, Larry O’Reilly and Fearghus Hannon set a new club record with a time of 43.91.This record has now been broken four times since 1988 and Ger Hensey has been the lead off runner on all four occasions.

There were individual victories for Fearghus Hannon in the 400 metres (49.74) and for Eoin Hannon in the Long Jump (7.01).Jan Vasil had a personal best in the High Jump with 1.90 metres. Joe Mulligan also recorded a personal best in the shot putt with a throw of 9.36 metres. Darragh Hanlon was fifth in the Pole Vault clearing 3.20 metres. Darragh is now closing in on the oldest club record of 3.30 metres which is jointly held by John Maher 1959 and Declan Murphy 1987.

The Ladies team were always facing an uphill battle in their quest for qualification for the final and despite a great effort by all they finished in 10th place and so missed out on the final by two places. As with the men there were a lot of good performances and Kelly Cunningham was rewarded with a personal best in the Discus where she threw 27.68 metres which gave her second place. Georgina Touhey also finished second in the 1500 metre Walk in a time of 7.11.91 as did Lisa Dolan in the Hammer (33.26) and Emer Brennan in the long jump (4.60).
