Curley and Fahey win Offaly Senior Titles.
The Offaly senior crosscountry championships took place in Charleville Estate in Tullamore last Sunday. It was a dry cool morning and the course was in perfect condition for running.
The womens race was run over a distance of 5000 metres and consisted of four laps. Pauline Curley went to the front from the start and was never troubled to come home a clear winner in a good time of 18.10. Behind Pauline there was a great battle for second place between Liz cuskelly and Maire Triona Keane with Ann Carroll and Rose Marie Masterson close behind. Going onto the last lap Pauline Curley had a big lead while Liz Cuskelly and Maire Triona Keane were still running together. Pauline increased her lead all the way to the finish with Liz holding off a fast finishing Maire Triona to take second. Maire Triona Keane took the bronze medal with Ann Carroll running a great last lap to pull away from Rose Marie Masterson who finished fifth.
The mens race was eight laps over 10,000 metres and here Declan Fahey took an early lead with John Donegan, Adrian Curley and Catch Grennan in a group close behind. Going onto the fourth lap Fahey had built up a commanding lead with Donegan breaking away from Curley who in turn had a small gap back to catch Grennan. This is the way it stayed to the finish with Declan Fahey coming home a clear winner to claim his first Offaly crosscountry title by a margin of 33 seconds with John Donegan second, and Adrian Curley a further 9 seconds back in third. Catch Grennan took fourth place Ahead of a fast finishing Martin Carroll.
